“A huge thank you for all your time and enthusiasm in creating an amazing space for the children to reflect and talk to God in different ways. We have had brilliant feedback from staff and children alike, saying how much they got out of it and how valuable it was to have the time and space to quietly reflect. Rarely have I seen such a demand from staff for a ‘repeat’ event, we would love to have you and the prayer spaces back.”Headteacher (Hampshire)

These activities have been developed, not to trivialise Remembrance Day, but to increase understanding and awareness by engaging pupils with the realities of World War One (WW1).

In WW1 32 nations fought for 4 years, 3 months and 2 weeks from 28th July 1914 – 11th November 1918. People fought for what they believed to be right. More than 16 million of them died.

This activity can be used as a stand-alone ‘Remembrance’ activity, or as part of a group of activities. Each candle represents different groups of people who are involved or affected by war.

This activity was adapted from Jane Whittington, Schools Officer Christian Distinctiveness for the Diocese of Guildford.
