From Monday 28th November to Friday 2nd December 2011, St Nicholas Primary School had their first prayer space.
The prayer space, run by members of local churches, had a hugely positive impact across the school, being a benefit to children of all abilities, needs and personalities. In fact the students enjoyed their time in the space so much that during break and lunch times there would be queues of children outside the room, waiting to come back in.
Opportunities to be quiet, to listen and to think are a rare thing in modern society and the children recognised the benefits. One child said; "It helped me reflect on things I have done, and calm down from playtimes and whatever has happened".
For some children the chance to have a break from the norm is a relief and this was evident in a number of responses, for example; "I thought it was great. You could express your feelings in different ways instead of shouting, crying or keeping them bottled up".
Further comments included; "It gave me time to be with God and just to have some time to myself" and "I felt calm and relaxed, I understand more about God now. I didn't realise people could pray in a different way".
Not only were the children impressed with the space, but also the staff, parents and governors of the school, such that there are now plans afoot to have something regularly, if not permanently, within the school.
Overall, the space was a massive success and the benefits of such a place are evident. The spiritual development of children is often overlooked in schools and this week showed just how important it is. I look forward to the next one we have arranged in term 4.
