We set up on Monday afternoon, including putting together our newest activity, “Identity” which is contained within a black draped frame. In a typical ‘timed to perfection’ bit of planning (!) we finished all the fitting, sewing, cutting and mirror hanging by 6pm leaving me the task of recording the narration with our new ‘voice of Sanctum’, Janine, at 8pm before editing it and exporting it to the mp3 players in time for this morning…

Sanctum is back in The Gilberd School for the third year running. We set up our first prayer space for schools here in the summer of 2008 and have been welcome visitors each year since. This morning we set up eleven activities in the “Small Hall” which provides lots of space and is also a bit of a thoroughfare outside lesson times which means pupils are aware of our presence.

So begins three weeks of Sanctum in Colchester schools, starting today at the Grammar School. We were here last year and saw students from Year 7 to Year 13 so we are interested in how they cope with the sense of déja-vu as 2/3rds of the activities in the prayer room are the same.

This is the place where Orison started back in 2008 with just a tent, some beanbags and a bubble tube, before it was even called Orison. Last year, for the second visit, the prayer tent had grown into a classroom with several different activities to explore. This year we returned for the third time, with 3 tents, the school’s wooden gazebo and one or two things to do outside too. The school has grown too so the spare classroom from last year isn’t spare anymore and Orison is back on the field, enjoying the sunshine.
